Ruqyah Is Not Merely Vomiting and Aggressive Reactions, But This Is the True Essence of Ruqyah

Ruqyah Is Not Merely Vomiting and Aggressive Reactions, But This Is the True Essence of Ruqyah

It must be understood that ruqyah is not merely a ritual, but part of a Sunnah act of worship. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself performed ruqyah and was also treated with ruqyah.

He said:

“لَا بَأْسَ بِالرُّقَى مَا لَمْ تَكُنْ شِرْكًا”

“There is no harm in ruqyah as long as it does not involve shirk” (Reported by Muslim)

In addition, the verses of the Qur’an are not merely recitations but also a source of healing (shifa), as Allah says:

“وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ”

“And We send down from the Qur’an that which is a healing and a mercy for the believers.” (Surah Al Isra’ 82)

When the Qur’an is recited, the patient’s body may react. This is often assumed to be part of the ruqyah process, but that is not always the case.

Indeed, some people experience strong physical reactions, while others experience only mild or ordinary responses.

If a patient does not react, this is where questions arise: does it mean the ruqyah was not effective, or the opposite?

Signs of successful ruqyah are often associated with the expulsion of unseen disturbances, whether in the form of jinn or the effects of magic, usually marked by natural bodily reactions.

Such as vomiting black/yellow/white substances, burping, defecation or urination, sneezing, sweating, passing gas, or other reactions.

Yes, it is true that vomiting often occurs during ruqyah. However, it must be understood that this reaction is not the only measure, and not everyone must experience it.

Some patients also feel unique physical sensations—such as something being pulled out of their body, headaches, tightness, or other sensations.

Or feeling heat moving, sudden itching that disappears, or sensations like electric shocks. These sensations are believed to indicate that something is being removed during ruqyah.

However, this is where caution is important. Islamic law does not make physical reactions the main benchmark.

It could be part of a natural process, or simply normal bodily reactions, and none of this can be confirmed with certainty without proper (shar’i) knowledge.

The most important thing is attaining blessings (rahmah) during ruqyah. And indeed, after ruqyah, 98 percent of patients feel their bodies become lighter.

Allah says:

“وَاِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْاٰنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوْا لَهٗ وَاَنْصِتُوْا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُوْنَ”

“And when the Qur’an is recited, listen to it attentively and be silent so that you may receive mercy.” (Surah Al A’raf 204)

The Qur’an describes this mercy as Allah’s compassion, gentleness, and goodness bestowed upon His servants.

Mercy is given both outwardly and inwardly, whether a person realizes it or not.

In simple terms, mercy means love, help, and goodness from Allah to His creation.

However, mercy is not only “affection” but can take many forms, such as:

  • Ease in life
  • Gentle reminders
  • Inner tranquility
  • Guidance from Allah
  • Forgiveness of sins
  • Patience in trials
  • Ease in repentance
  • Sincerity in deeds
  • Protection from harm
  • Contentment (qana’ah)
  • Covering one’s faults
  • Being kept away from evil
  • A good ending (husnul khatimah)
  • Being granted a good environment
  • Strength of heart (steadfastness)
  • Protection from diseases of the heart
  • Relief of the chest (peace of heart)
  • And many other forms of Allah’s mercy

Allah says:

“وَرَحْمَتِي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ”

“My mercy encompasses all things” (Surah AlA’raf 156)

Indeed, Allah’s mercy is vast and limitless. Including after ruqyah, when burdens that once pressed heavily feel as though they are lifted gradually.

This is a real change often felt after ruqyah. Moreover, changes in the heart are far more important.

Especially when the mind becomes calmer, anxiety decreases, and fears that once haunted begin to fade.

Allah has stated:

“أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ”

“Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find tranquility” (Surah Ar-Ra’d 28)

There are also changes in one’s worship. Someone who previously found prayer difficult may now find it easier.

Those who were distant from dhikr may begin to feel the sweetness of remembering Allah. This is in fact a very strong sign of improvement.

Some also say that physical illnesses previously unclear medically begin to improve. However, Islam teaches balance—medical effort is also important.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“تَدَاوَوْا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ، فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَمْ يَضَعْ دَاءً إِلَّا وَضَعَ لَهُ دَوَاءً”

“Seek treatment, O servants of Allah, for Allah has not sent down any disease except that He has also sent down its cure” (Reported by Tirmidhi)

Some people also experience certain dreams after ruqyah, such as seeing something leaving their body or feeling released from pressure.

These dreams are often considered symbolic of release, although they cannot be used as definitive proof.

All of the signs above may occur, but they are not obligatory.

Because healing is not measured by dramatic reactions, but by transformation toward goodness. It is possible that someone experiences nothing during ruqyah, yet their heart comes back to life.

Most importantly, ruqyah is a form of effort. Healing entirely comes from Allah—not from the practitioner or the method, but solely by Allah’s permission.

Therefore, after ruqyah, one must not become negligent. Instead, one must maintain oneself through worship, dhikr, and closeness to Allah.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught protection through dhikr, such as reciting Ayat Kursi:

“Allah—there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great” (Surah Al Baqarah 255)

In hadith it is explained that whoever recites it will be protected by Allah from the disturbance of Satan from morning until evening. This shows that the primary fortress of a believer is dhikr.

The journey of life is not about sensations, but about returning—returning to Allah, correcting the heart, and living life with faith as the foundation.

In the end, the true sign of successful ruqyah is not vomiting or physical reactions, but when a person becomes closer to Allah, finds peace in the heart, and gains strength to face life.

That is where true healing lies—not only in the body, but in a soul that comes back to life in the light of faith.

Based on our 26 years of observation, the signs of successful ruqyah are not only seen from physical sensations, but from deeper changes: a calmer heart, a lighter body, and a stronger closeness to Allah.

Feeling weak after ruqyah may indicate that the jinn disturbance within the body has weakened, detached, or is in the process of leaving.

This condition is a common reaction, where the jinn inhabiting or binding the body becomes weak due to the influence of Qur’anic verses.

In the healing process, weakness or fatigue is natural and part of the therapeutic effect. It is not always a bad sign. If symptoms appear, it is recommended to continue ruqyah, especially if certain verses trigger those reactions.
